Highway 60 Athletic Complex
I wanted to give the community an update on an issue that has arisen with the athletic fields across the street from the Elementary School/OSC building which is often referred to as the Highway 60 athletic complex. The complex has several lights that have not been working, so the District reached out to a company to do some repair work on the non-functioning lights. The company shared they did not feel the light poles are structurally sound, and would not be able to navigate the poles until a professional evaluation of structural soundness of the poles was secured. This led the District to contract an engineering firm to evaluate the light pole's structural integrity. The resulting assessment from the engineering firm is that the poles are no longer structurally sound and should be removed within the next five years.
This led the District to reach out to our liability insurance carrier, who indicated that with this knowledge the District needed to remove the poles as soon as possible and shut down the Highway 60 complex to everyone until this work is accomplished. That takes a significant portion of green space out of use for the Lodi community for the foreseeable future.
The District is working to secure bids for the removal of the light poles, but it will take some time to secure a bid and get this project completed. We are in the process of reaching out to the different groups who utilize the Hwy 60 complex to help them reschedule their programs and activities in different areas throughout the District and the community.
The safety and security of our students, staff, and community members continues to be the number one priority for the District. We are committed to working with all of our community youth partners to ensure that their practices and events go on this fall. If you are involved in one of these activities you should be hearing from your organization about the next steps for each individual activity.
